A few years ago I began doing a practice that really changed how I felt mentally, physically, and spiritually! So I decided that I would write to you today about how I hydrate mindfully!
Just like any mindful practice, we are just simply bringing more consciousness or awareness to the activity. By being embodied & intentional in each movement, we can actually have MORE effects from the action we're taking.
Because it's easier to start a mindfulness practice by incorporating small mindful tasks throughout your day, mindful hydration is one of the first ones I like to integrate with my clients! We all drink water (hopefully!), so why not enhance our effects and our experience with it?
The practice...
To begin, simply meet your body before you even have the cup of water in your hand. Do this by breathing deep into your belly. Repeat this a few times until you feel a bit more present.
Now when you grab the cup to take your sip, move very slowly and thoughtfully. Bring awareness to the muscles in your shoulders, biceps, all the way down to your fingertips & all the movements your body is making to create that movement.
Consider how little effort and brainpower it took for all those pieces & parts of your body to create that action.
Now keep this same awareness as you take a sip of water. Taste the water- yes, you will be able to taste the water! Does it taste heavy of minerals? Do you taste the material of the cup? Is it perhaps a little sweet? Is the water cold or room temp?
Really focus on the way the liquid feels inside your mouth, as it meets your tongue and goes to your throat. Track it as the water goes through your organism and into your stomach.
You may want to another mindful sip, just as we did previously before we begin adding intention.
To add intention to your practice, keep in mind when you go to take your next sip that you are hydrating. An act of love to your body so that it can perform properly and sufficiently.
As the next splashes into your belly, bring in intention again that your water is hydrating all of your cells (envision them if you can). With each sip, your skin hydrates and becomes more supple. Your hair absorbs life and shines. Your energy levels increase and you're becoming clearer.
You can also bring in the intention that the water is helping things to flow through you! With each sip, the energy that has been built up or weighing you down can release.
