7 Decorating Tips For Dark Winters (That Improve Mental Health!)

Updated: Oct 24, 2019

So the Sun is going down earlier and earlier here in the Northeast. Those frigid months are right around the corner, and this tends to be a time where mental health declines for most people.

I always recommend getting outside even on these colder & rainier days but let's face it, people are going to be spending way more time indoors. Here are some of my decorating tips to make your (dark) indoor spaces cozy and good for mental health!

1. KEEP IT CLEAN- If you're not someone who's really into home decor, at least pick up the clutter here and there. It might start as a couple of pieces of clothing on the floor around the laundry basket but soon there's no carpet left to see and cups all over the nightstand (trust me- I've been there). Having a space that's kept tidy so that energy, creativity, inspiration, & thoughts can flow is SO influential in my mental wellness!

2. Sun lamps! These wonderful lamps generate energy to mimic the sun and have wonderful effects on mood disorders. I particularly love Himalayan salt lamps for this reason too.

3. Aromatherapy- using oil diffusers or incense throughout the home can be wonderful for mental wellness. Each fragrance has it's own beautiful healing benefits that can be blended together to do wonders in the air. A particular favorite essential oil blend for me in the winter months is lavender, rosemary, & cedarwood.

4. Affirmations- A lot of people have pillows, posters, mugs, etc with catchy & motivating affirmations on them. Sometimes those little reminders throughout the day can be a lovely pick-me-up! I have "Keep Calm & Dream On" above my meditation corner that reminds me to take a breath and keep striving for my wildest dreams.

5. Things that bring you joy! These are items like crystals, artwork, pictures of friends/family, candles, hobby items (like drawing pads, puzzles, or a guitar), etc. I try to place a bit of all of these around my home so that I have something to smile about in nearly every nook and cranny! Amethyst & Citrine are some of my favorite minerals to hold space with during the colder seasons.

6. Plants!!! Let Mama Earth purify your air and act as a reminder that you can bloom wherever you're planted. Some good low light plants are Pothos, Bamboo, Chinese Evergreen, Snake Plants, Aloe Vera, Creeping Figs, Bromeliads, Peace Lilies, Philodendrons, ZZ Plant, and almost any Succulent.

7. Using an Ionizer has tons of incredible health benefits, some including having great effects on mood disorders! They add negative ions to the air which contributes healing to all kinds of different ailments like allergies, asthma, moods & more.

I hope these tips inspire you to make your space extra cozy during these upcoming brisk months!

Stay (vegan) cheesin' for no reason!
